About the Justice for Sergei Magnitsky Inter-Parliamentary Group

Irwin CotlerIrwin Cotler is Chairman of the Justice for Sergei Magnitsky Interparliamentary Group. He is also Canada’s Member of Parliament for Mount Royal and the former Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada. He has a long history of defending political prisoners in the former Soviet Union and Russia. Irwin Cotler has formerly represented Nathan Sharansky and Nelson Mandela.

William Browder visited Ottawa on December 11th, where he appeared before the Canadian House of Commons Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on International Human Rights to discuss the Magnitsky case.  Mr Cotler and some of his Parliamentary colleagues felt so outraged by the story that he decided to form the IPG. They were also emboldend by the passage of the Magnitsky Law in the USA only weeks earlier.

Following the testimony, the Honorable Irwin Cotler MP announced the “Justice for Sergei Magnitsky Inter-Parliamentary Group,” which will seeks to mobilize international parliamentary and media awareness of Magnitsky’s case and cause, to internationalize the advocacy, and to help expose the culture of corruption and impunity in Russia today.

Mr Cotler contacted Parliamentarians from countries around the world who have taken a public and parliamentary stand on the Magnitsky case and invited them all to join this new global initiative.
